050: Prussian Authority: the Pickelhaube of the Captain of Köpenick – Heirlooms 2

That spiky Prussian helmet has become such a symbol of Germans that it is the actual sign for “German” in many sign languages. The story of the Captain of Köpenick embodies that sense of authority well and is one of our favorite stories.

That and we celebrate 50 episodes!

045: 500 Years – 95 Thesis and Martin Luther in Wittenberg

For the 500 year anniversary of Martin Luther nailing 95 thesis to the church door in Wittenberg, I went to Witteberg to visit der Buddler, of Secret Cabinet fame, who worked as a curator for an amazing exhibit. I recorded all day about the happenings, like medieval markets and reenactments, the exhibit itself, and the hundreds of thousands of visitors to this small town.

I recorded parts of the exhibit and my wanderings around Wittenberg on October 31st, 2017 for these Podcasts:

So to get the most out 95 artifacts from the past 500 years, and how the town of Wittenberg — and all of Germany — celebrated, listen to all. They’re great podcasts anyway!

044: Investiture Controversy with the History of the Papacy

Power struggles between Holy Roman Emperors and Popes. Gregorian Reforms, schisms and who can appoint bishops. Many ideas we have of the Middle Ages com from these events in the 12. century. Luckily I got Steven Guerra from the History of the Papacy here to help break it all down. Visit http://atozhistorypage.com for more on the background of the church at this time.

041: The Danevirke with Søren Krarup

Søren Krarup from the History of Denmark podcast stops by to clear up the Danevirke: this huge Danish defensive fortification that is now in Germany. I’ve mentioned it several times in passing with Harald Bluetooth and Otto II, so better just have a whole episode around it. https://thehistoryofdenmark.wordpress.com/
